A Sweet Day Serving Outside Our Walls at Cortney's Place
A Sweet Day Serving Outside Our Walls at Cortney's Place
Some days fill your cup in ways you do not expect. June 15th was one of those days for our Spinato's team. We had the privilege of visiting Cortney's Place at their Scottsdale location, and from the moment we walked in, we could feel the joy, kindness, and community that make this organization so special. Cortney's Place is a family-founded nonprofit that provides inclusive, meaningful day programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Their programs help create a safe, supportive, and engaging space where adults can build friendships, participate in activities, gain independence, and feel truly seen and celebrated.
At Spinato's, one of our core values is community, and one of our fundamentals is serving outside our walls. Our family believes wholeheartedly in servant leadership, and after 51 years of being supported by this incredible Arizona community, we believe it is our responsibility and our joy to give back whenever we can.
For our visit, we brought a little Spinato's sweetness with us and set up a cannoli bar filled with colorful toppings. Everyone got to create their own one-of-a-kind tasty treat with fun toppings, big smiles, and plenty of personality. It was such a simple thing, but watching everyone build their own cannoli masterpiece reminded us that food has a beautiful way of bringing people together.
We also had the chance to color with the Cortney's Place community and spend time getting to know the amazing people who participate in their program. I had the pleasure of sitting with Grant, who was an absolute gentleman. We colored together and talked about his favorite color, his favorite person, his brother, and the fun travel plans he has coming up this summer. It was one of those conversations that sticks with you. Sweet, genuine, and full of joy.
That is what made the day so special. Yes, the cannoli bar was fun. Yes, the toppings were colorful. But the real gift was the time spent together. The laughter. The conversations. The chance to slow down, connect, and be reminded of what community is really all about.
Cortney's Place serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in both Scottsdale and Phoenix through thoughtful programming that includes life skills, art, healthy cooking, adaptive fitness, music therapy, hydrotherapy, community outings, and more. Their work helps create meaningful days for their members while also supporting families who want their loved ones to be included, encouraged, and cared for.
If you are looking for a way to get involved, Cortney's Place offers volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups who want to help enrich the lives of adults with IDD. Volunteers can support activities, spend time with members, and bring connection, creativity, and encouragement into the program. You can also support Cortney's Place through a donation, including through the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit, which allows Arizona taxpayers to direct state tax dollars to qualifying charitable organizations. Our day at Cortney's Place was a beautiful reminder that serving outside our walls does not have to be complicated. Sometimes it looks like showing up with cannoli shells, bowls of toppings, markers, and an open heart.
To Cortney's Place, thank you for welcoming our Spinato's team into your community. To Grant and everyone we had the joy of meeting, thank you for sharing your smiles, your stories, and your afternoon with us. It was truly a wonderful day, and one we will not soon forget.
With gratitude,
~Jaime Spinato
