No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town: Partnering with Sleep in Heavenly Peace
Hey friends and neighbors,
I want to share something that really touched my heart recently. As many of you know, one of our core values at Spinato's is serving outside our walls. For 51 years, our family and team have been passionate about giving back to the communities that have supported us, and this story perfectly embodies what that looks like in action.
Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to visit the Phoenix chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, or SHP for short. For those who aren't familiar, SHP is a national nonprofit with a simple but powerful mission: "No kid sleeps on the floor in our town." They build and deliver beds, complete with mattresses, sheets, pillows, and blankets, to children who don't have a bed of their own.
When I first pulled up to the SHP warehouse, it was tucked away behind a row of industrial buildings. It looked like the kind of place you could easily drive right past without realizing the incredible work happening inside. But the moment I stepped through the door, I could feel the heart and energy in the room. The warehouse was massive, clean, and buzzing with life. About 60 volunteers were hard at work sanding wood, assembling frames, and laughing together as upbeat music played through the speakers.
On one wall, plaques proudly displayed the names of organizations and partners that have supported SHP's mission over the years. In another room, I saw shelves lined with bright bedding, pillows, stuffed animals, and blankets, each one carefully packed and waiting to make a child's day when they're delivered to their new home.
The folks who run the Phoenix chapter are among the most genuine and kind-hearted people I've ever met. They truly believe in what they're doing, and it shows in every detail. By the time I left that day, my mind was already spinning (no pun intended) with ideas about how Spinato's could come alongside them.
The truth is, the need here in our community is greater than many realize. According to SHP, about 2 to 3 percent of children across the U.S. don't have a bed of their own. Here in the Valley, that translates to thousands of kids, and right now, the local chapter's waiting list includes more than 2,000 requests from families hoping to give their children a safe, comfortable place to sleep. It's hard to imagine, isn't it? Kids right here in Phoenix are sleeping on floors or couches instead of beds.
That's why this November, Spinato's, along with more than 40 volunteers and our amazing Kindness Challenge sponsors, is joining forces with SHP to build 25 beds for kids right here in the Valley. We'll spend the day cutting, sanding, assembling, and delivering bunk beds, and every single one will be made with love and care. We're bringing the same teamwork and joy that fills our restaurants to this build day, and I couldn't be more proud of our team and partners for stepping up.
But beyond that, I'm reminded of how simple acts of kindness can ripple out in powerful ways. A bed might seem like a small thing, but for a child, it can mean better rest, better focus in school, and most importantly, a sense of dignity and belonging.
When I walked through that warehouse, surrounded by volunteers giving their time and energy to serve others, I was reminded that this is what community looks like: people coming together to make sure every child is cared for, seen, and loved.
At Spinato's, we often discuss servant leadership, emphasizing the importance of putting others first and using our blessings to uplift others. Working with SHP is such a beautiful expression of that, and we are beyond excited to partner with them to make a difference this holiday season.
If you feel moved to join us for a holiday volunteer event in Phoenix, building beds for children in need, or simply spreading the word, we'd love to have you be part of this mission. Together, we can make sure that in our town, no kid sleeps on the floor. Be A Part Of The Mission
With gratitude,
~Jaime Spinato
